| | Born in Elsworth, ME in 1844. Peters moved to San Francisco with his family in 1852. What art training he had is unknown; he may have been self-taught. He soon gained fame and fortune for his portraits of presidents and society notables. His portrait of General Grant brought him great renown early in his career. During the 1870s and 1880s he had a studio in San Francisco, but by 1890 he had moved to San Jose. In ill health during the latter part of his life, he died destitute at the Santa Clara (CA) Infirmary on March 24, 1934 and was buried at public expense. Exh: Mechanics' Inst.
