Known for his mezzotint portraits and also for portrait paintings, Peter Pelham was born in London, England and immigrated to Boston in 1727 where he lived the remainder of his life except for two years in Newport, Rhode Island, 1734-1736. In London he studied with John Simon, one of the leading mezzo tinters, and he completed about 25 portraits of Englishmen before leaving that country. In Boston, he did the first mezzotint ever done in the Colonies, a portrait of Cotton Mather.
