Biography from LeKae Gallery/Taos Gallery:
| RANDY PIJOAN
Living in Colorado
Randy Pijoan has been a profound and fearless painter set within the framework of contemporary realism. He is focusing his work towards the visual reality of western contemporary life at the turn of this century, as well as capturing the spirit of the natural landscape in America’s outback. Pijoan’s paintings are dramatic renderings of current times. He is nationally known for the pioneering of nocturnal paintings of the big city, with what has been acclaimed as the largest body of work dedicated to the city nightscape subject.
Pijoan’s works in gouache and large scale oil paintings can be found in galleries throughout the American West as well as in Chicago, Illinois, and Wilmington, North Carolina. Numerous shows and commissions throughout the United States and parts of Europe have awarded Pijoan’s creativity with solo museum shows as well as features and cover articles in national art magazines. Recently Pijoan has been the head of the new art movement "Phrasism" which has received national attention from play writes, poets, and photographers, creating the momentum for curated exhibitions based on the subject.
Pijoan relies on gouache for swiftly capturing what he refers to as the aura of a scene. He finds the opacity and quick-drying nature of the medium give him the control to create intricate details and the flexibility to interpret what he sees without hesitation.
"Ever since Randy Pijoan blew the dust off an old box of gouache paints in his grandfather’s studio, the Oregon-based artist has used this medium to create bold, colorful scenes of the Western landscape." American Artist/Watercolor Magazine, January, 1999
