Born in London, England, Robert Pine became a portrait painter and was of the first generation of painters in America who used their work for political purposes. He had art training that began with his father, John Pine, a noted engraver. Other artist relatives were his brother, Simon Pine, miniature painter, and his brother-in-law, Alexander Cozens.
By the 1760s, he was painting lush portraits including George III and actor David Garrick, and in reputation, became the rival of Sir Joshu (showing 500 of 2018 characters). |
