Biography from Martin-Zambito Fine Art:
Ruth Esther Penington (1905-1998)

Painter, printmaker, metalsmith, craftsperson, teacher.

Born in Colorado Springs, CO., moved to Seattle in 1907.
B.F.A, M.F.A., University of Washington.
Studied: Columbia University, 1929.
And with V. Vytlacil, E. Steinhof, A. Ozenfant.
1929 - 1969: Instructor,  (Full Professor from 1951) University of Washington
1945-47: Instructor, University of California, Berkeley.

Founder/co-founder of several NW arts organizations including;
1928: Northwest Printmakers
1945: Established the Industrial Design department at the University of Washington.
1954: Founder and Director, Fidalgo School of Allied Arts, La Conner, WA.
Co-Founder of Northwest Designer Craftsmen.

Awards: Purchase Prize: Seattle Art Museum, Northwest Printmakers, 1937 & 39.
Washington State Award, Northwest Printmakers, 1942.
Governors Award of Special Commendation, 1972.
