Thomas Stephen Powell aspired to paint portraits in upcountry South Carolina, Georgia, and Alabama, despite minimal training. He was educated at the Male Academy in Greenville and may have traveled to the state capitol, Columbia, to take lessons from William Kennedy Barclay, a student of Thomas Sully.
He supported himself and members of his family by painting houses, banners, blackboards for Furman University, and designed the seal for the City of Greenville. His total known oeuvre (showing 500 of 881 characters). |
