This biography from the Archives of AskART:
Born in Siberia on Dec. 20, 1895. Perfilieff was a captain in the Czar's Imperial Army. The Russian Revolution brought him to the U.S. in 1920. He soon entered the PAFA followed by further study in Paris and with John Singer Sargent in Boston. He was active as a portraitist in NYC and maintained a studio in Boston. In the late 1920s he made overseas expeditions with the New York Zoological Society. In 1934 he relocated to the milder climate of southern California. Settling in San Juan Capistrano, he established a studio near the mission. He painted there until 1937 when he moved to nearby Laguna Beach. For the next seven years he maintained a studio-home at 308 Ocean Avenue and was active in the local art scene. He died in Laguna Beach on May 11, 1943. Primarily a portrait painter, he also painted scenes from his travels and landscapes. Exh: PAFA, 1923, 1928; Laguna Beach AA, 1939; Dana Point Art Guild, 1941; Laguna Beach Art Gallery, 1942 (solo).
