| Born in Chengtu, China, Wilbur David Peat lived in Indiana and Ohio, and was a painter, museum director, writer and lecturer. He studied at Ohio Wesleyan University, the Cleveland School of Art, the National Academy of Design, the Art Students League, and the University of Chicago.
From 1924 to 1929, he was Director of the Akron Ohio Art Institute and from 1929 until his retirement was Director of the John Herron Art Institute in Indianapolis. He wrote books and was a regular contributor to the Indiana Magazine of History, and the Art Quarterly, and lectured on Pioneer Painters of Indiana.
