| | Born in New York on Dec. 19, 1828. Porter began his art career in NYC in the 1840s painting scenery in the Old Bowery and Park theaters. In 1870 he settled in San Francisco where he continued painting scenes for Tivoli Opera House and other theaters, as well as landscapes and portraits. His paintings are rare since most of his works went up in flames in the fire following the earthquake in 1906.
