| Born in Minneapolis, MN on Nov. 17, 1886. Potter earned degrees from the University of Minnesota and Columbia University before serving in WWI. A wealthy businessman, he and his wife, artist Miriam Clark, moved to the French Riviera in 1930. Having handled and admired advertising art, in 1932 he bought oils and taught himself to paint. In 1937 the Potters went to Mexico City where Zenas had his first one-man show. In 1939 they settled on the Monterey Peninsula and built a home in Carmel. Like Winston Churchill whom he resembled, Potter painted to escape the pressures of his high governmental duties during WWII. He was active with the Carmel Art Ass'n until his demise on July 7, 1958. | Source: Edan Hughes, "Artists in California, 1786-1940" NY Times, 7-10-1958 (obituary). | | Nearly 20,000 biographies can be found in Artists in California 1786-1940 by Edan Hughes and is available for sale ($150).
