Biography from AskART:
A Hopi Indian, he is a sculptor, ceramist, and potter of Native American subjects of a variety of Native cultures including his own. One of his goals is to show the unity of cultures, the fact that they are all tied together by a shared origin and/or migration.

His work is in the collections of the Heard Museum in Phoenix, Arizona; the Denver Art Museum; and the Millicent Rogers Museum in Taos, New Mexico.
---------------------------------------------------------------------
Before turning to art, Al Qoyawayma, a resident of Prescott, Arizona earned advanced degrees in mechanical and control systems engineering. He worked on inertial guidance systems and star trackers. He later joined an energy utility where he headed the environmental department. Qoyawayma co-founded and became the first chairman of the American Indian Science and Engineering Society, which now has over 300 chapters nationwide.

Qoyawayma is also a Hopi potter and sculptor who in tries to stay in touch with the ancient ways of the Hopi people. "I have had the advantage of an education and have gained a knowledge of the technical world, yet I have found the challenge of the clay equal to any experience in that world.

Qoyawayma has had many prestigious honors including a presidential appointment to be vice-chairman of the board of trustees of the Institute of American Indian Arts, an honorary doctorate from the University of Colorado at Boulder for helping increase opportunities for Native Americans, and named Alumnus of the Year in 1989 by California Polytechnic State University at San Luis Obispo, a Fulbright fellowship to help the Maori in the South Pacific re-establish their ancient ceramic tradition.
