Jose Hernandez Quero was born in Molinos Street No.82, Granada on November 27, 1930. He was the seventh of the nine children family of Rafael Hernández Barredo.and Dolores Quero Ballesteros, both natives of Granada.
 
As a child he attended the Ave María School.  At this time the tragic death of a boy of his age, blown up to pieces in the way home from school by a bomb from a plane during the civil war, left a lasting impression on him.
 
After leaving primary school, he obtained the High School degree (Bachillerato) at evening classes and learned typing in the Plaza de Cuchilleros.
 
When he was 15 years old, advised by his mother, whose support would be a constant in the painter’s career, he went to the Art School of Granada, (Escuela de Artes y Oficios) where he received artistic drawing lessons.  In the free hours, he helped his father in the tools and implements workshop.  These workshops for farming implements were very popular in Granada at that time.
 
He remembers that his father “knew Federico García Lorca and used to talk to him in his workshop.  On his way to visit Manuel de Falla in the Carmen de la Antequeruela in the Caidero, the poet Lorca stopped at the workshop to satisfy his curiosity about the tools and implements and to perceive with delight the good smell of fresh wood.  He and my father talked about simple things.  Federico was very sociable and very modest.  Later, my father used to tell me about his conversations with the poet, who had doubtless enriched many moments of his life.”
 
Notwithstanding the interest of his father, he worked with him only a short period of time.  In 1948, he got a job as a wood engraver for a furniture workshop in Lavadero de las Tablas street, but this did not last long, and in 1951 he joined the Anel printing works as a draughtsman.

He frequented the studio of Gabriel Morcillo and those of the painters Rafael Latorre and Manuel Maldonado, where he met Miguel Pérez Aguilera who encouraged him to study Bellas Artes in Sevilla.
 
In 1956 he went to study at the Fine Arts High School, Santa Isabel de Hungría in Sevilla.  A year later he began to exhibit his work, first in the Liceo in Granada and then in the Piqueras Gallery in Albacete. In 1958 he held another exhibition in the Casino Cultural in Almería, and at the same time, he took part in the Still Life competition of the Rodríguez-Acosta Foundation, obtaining the award for local artists.
 
In 1959 he met Salvador Dalí in Granada. He presented a work in the Rodríguez-Acosta Foundation exhibition: Los niños(The children) and exhibited also in the Sala Municipal de Arte in Córdoba.  He was awarded a scholarship by the Town Council of Granada to travel to Paris where he discovered the genius of the Impressionists.  In September he decided to transfer his studies to the Escuela Superior de Bellas Artes de San Fernando in Madrid. Miguel Rodríguez Acosta (colour), Villaseñor (mural decoration), Martínez Díaz (landscaping), Absuara, Luis Alegre (graphic work) and Enrique Lafuente Ferrari (history of art), will be his Professors and teachers.
 
In 1961 he received the student prize for Perspective in the Fine Arts High School of Madrid and a scholarship of the Rodríguez-Acosta Foundation, awarded for mural decoration, for his painting “Historia de la Rueda”.  He travelled for the first time to Italy, and on his return he began to study copper engraving, obtaining several prizes in 1962:

First Prize for Drawing, granted by the Dirección General de Bellas Artes to students in the Escuelas Superiores de Bellas Artes, being pensioned in Segovia.

Silver Medal of the SEU, (University Students Union), in Madrid

Landscape Scholarship:“El Paular” in Segovia, where he obtains the Golden Medal.

In 1963 he completed his studies in the Escuela de Bellas Artes de San Fernando, obtaining the title of Professor of Drawing, and travelled with his fellow students to Egypt.

In the same year he was awarded the second prize of the Autumn Exhibition in Sevilla, and he went through an intense period of work, exhibitions and travels, full of awards and recognitions.
 
In 1964 he finished his studies of engraving and obtained a scholarship of the Ministry of Education for students already graduated in the Escuelas de Artes Aplicadas y Oficios, which allowed him to attend workshops in the Escuela Central in La Palma Street in Madrid.
 
Miguel Rodríguez-Acosta introduced him to the painter, Francisco Echauz, who had been appointed Secretary to the Spanish Academy in Rome and wanted that Hernández Quero took his post as professor in the Escuela de Arte y Decoración Siena.
 
In 1965, he obtained a scholarship of the Juan March Foundation that allowed him to study engraving in Italy, where he worked in the Calcografia Nazionale in Rome and in the Gabinetto della Stampa in Florence.  On his return, he received the Calvo Sotelo prize in the Exhibition in Puertollano, Ciudad Real.  He was chosen to take part in the Biennial of Alejandria where he obtained the bronze medal for engraving.  In the evenings and for some years, he would attend the life drawing workshops of the Círculo de Bellas Artes de Madrid.
 
In 1966 he was awarded the prize Corporaciones in the National Exhibition of Fine Arts for his painting “Bodegón de la niña y el pájaro”, which now hangs in the Museo de Bellas Artes of Granada.  He obtained the first prize for drawing in the Exhibition of Painters for Africa held in Madrid, as well as a new Prize of the Dirección General de Bellas Artes in the Autumn Exhibition in Sevilla and a Gold medal in Puertollano.
 
In 1967 he won the First Prize of the City Council of Córdoba in the “Congress of Painting in Architecture” and the Engraving Prize from the Patronato de la Alambra in the Rodríguez-Acosta Foundation.
 
In 1968 he received the Second Medal for Drawing in the National Exhibition of Fine Arts, and in 1969 he was awarded the Caja de Ahorros prize in the Autumn Exhibition in Sevilla.  He was invited to the Engraving Biennial in Puerto Rico.
 
In 1970 he was appointed, as Number One to the professorship of Artistic Drawing in the Escuela de Artes y Oficios Artísticos in Madrid.  The Board of Examiners included Genaro Lahuerta, Pedro Mozos and Núñez de Celis.

On September 17 his father died in Granada. 

He was awarded a scholarship of the Juan March Foundation for investigation of painting and woodcuts on the subject of Spanish landscape, travelling through Spain.  He also won the first Prize Domeniko “El Greco” of the Biennial del Tajo in Toledo, the Prize Mariano de la Paz in the National Exhibition of Linares and that of the Biennial of Zaragoza.
 
In 1971 he received the Prize “Ciudad de Almería” in the III Semana Naval of Alborán, First Prize and Gold Medal of Engraving in the Triennial of Santiago de Compostela.
 
In 1972 he obtained the First Prize Drawing in the Bienal of Málaga.
 
In 1973 he won the Azorín Prize Drawing of the Diputación Provincial of Alicante, the First Prize and Gold Medal on the fiftieth anniversary of the College of Veterinarians in Madrid, and the Prize of the University of Santiago de Compostela. This same year, he moved to the Paseo de la Reina María Cristina in Madrid, to a flat near that of the painter José Gutiérrez Solana.
 
In 1975 he visited Greece and Italy, staying in Rome and Florence for six months where he did a series of engravings and woodcuts and participated in the itinerant exhibition of graphic art in homage to Federico García Lorca through London, Rome, Alexandria and Puerto Rico.
 
In 1976 he was awarded the Prize of the Academia de Bellas Artes Santa Isabel de Hungría of Sevilla.
 
In 1978 he was nominated as Corresponding Academician of the Real Academia de Bellas Artes Nuestra Señora de las Angustias of Granada.  He declined the appointment as Director of the Escuela de Artes Aplicadas y Oficios Artísticos in Madrid.
 
In 1980 he published his first book of his graphic work with the prologue by Enrique Lafuente Ferrari.
 
In 1981 he got married to María Luisa Rodríguez Melero, born in Lujar (Granada) on May 4, and participated in the III Iberoamerican Biennial of Art: “Landscape in the Spanish Painting”, Mexico.  One year later, his brother Rafael died.
 
The following years he donated some works to various institutions, among them: National Library, National Intaglio Print, University of Granada, Romantic Museum of Madrid, Real Academia de Bellas Artes Santa Isabel de Hungría in Sevilla, Municipal Museum in Madrid, and Bank of Granada.
 
In 1985 he received the Prize “Granada-citizen of the year” and the Prize of the Real Academia de Bellas Artes Santa Isabel de Hungría in Sevilla.
 
In 1988 he travelled to Japan, visiting Tokyo, Osaka, Kyoto, Kobe and Nara.
 
He was nominated as Corresponding Academician of the Real Academia de Bellas Artes de Santa Isabel de Hungría in Sevilla, and in 1989 Corresponding Academician of the Real Academia de Bellas Artes de San Fernando in Madrid.
 
In 1989 he was appointed by the Ministry of Education to prepare a report on fashion and textile design,with the guidelines for its teaching.  With this aim in mind he visited a number of centers in Madrid, Barcelona, Rome , Florence, Milan, before presenting his report.  At the request of Ministry of Education he undertook a wider and more detailed study including all the main fashion and textile centers in the world in order to improve its teaching to the highest level.
 
In 1991 at the request of the Ministry of Education he continued the research, undertaking a wider and more detailed study including all the main fashion and textile centers in the world, presenting his report in 1993 with the view to achieving a high level of arts education in the Escuelas de Artes y Oficios.

In these years he transferred to the Bank of Granada and Central Hispano Foundation in Madrid almost the totality of his artistic works and took early retirement from his professorship in the Escuela de Artes Aplicadas y Oficios Artísticos in Madrid.

In 1995 he travelled to the north of Spain, visiting its museums, monuments and studying their customs, traditions and folklore.
 
On January 10, 1998, his mother died in Granada.
 
In 1999 he travelled to Argentina, visiting the main cities and in 2000, to the United States, visiting New York, Washington, San Francisco, New Orleans and Los Angeles for a new research on costume design, with the purpose of improving the quality of teaching.
 
In 2003 he exhibited at the Cultural Center Gran Capitán in Granada and also in Seville.  In this year he was awarded the Medal in Fine Arts for Painting: José María Rodríguez Acosta, granted by the Real Academia de Bellas Artes Nuestra Señora de las Angustias in Granada.
 
In 2004 he travelled to London to visit the main museums and theaters, and in 2005, travelled around the north of Spain, to the main cities and major towns, to learn about folk art and folklore.
 
In 2006 he exhibited for the first time the woodcuts that he had made in the 70s, and in 2007, the fashion and textile designs and sketches made in the 80s.
 
In 2008 he traveled to Paris and Marseille.
 
In 2009 he took part in the Exhibition "60 Artistas del Museo Luis González Robles", University of Alcalá

In his extensive career, Jose Hernandez Quero has combined the professions of painter, draftsman, and print maker, with that of Professor in the Chair of Artistic Drawing of the School of Applied Arts in Madrid.
 
His work turns around three major themes:
 
LANDSCAPES, especially his beloved Granada and the rugged landscapes of that region, full of rich contrasts and visual beauty, “... broad landscapes, of high horizons, dull and sensitive colors, ...”
 
STILL LIFES: paintings of inanimate objects such as fruits, vegetables, flowers or everyday objects, sublimated by the brush, chisel or pencil.
 
THE HUMAN FIGURE,  which include portraits of important people of the cultural and artistic word of the past century: Lorca, Raquel Meller, … , or his studies of nudes.
 
For the artistic expression, without excluding other techniques, he prefers oil painting, etching or drawing, sometimes applied to the same model or group of elements with slight variations of position, perspective or predominant colors, highlighting nuances.
 
His style is, critics say, realistic from a figurative conception of art.  Angelic painter, -says of him Camilo José Cela-, is able to paint the air, the love and the poetry.
 
Manuel Maldonado, Eduardo Chicharro, Lafuente Ferrari, Rodríguez Acosta and Luis Alegre will be his teachers, whom he admires and whose influence he acknowledges.
 
His work is exhibited in Museums and Institution Collections open to the public, but it is hard to find at auctions and commercial locations.
