|  A Philadelphia painter, Read was a student of William Merritt Chase and Thomas Anshutz at the Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Art. She was a member of the Philadelphia Art Alliance, the Plastic Club and the American Federation of Artists and exhibited at the Pennsylvania Academy, the Boston Art Club, and the Art Institute of Chicago.
Before marriage, she signed her last name von Helmold. |
