This biography from the Archives of AskART:
A conceptual artist born in Cleveland, Ohio and spending time in California but living primarily in New York City, Allen Ruppersberg studied at the Chouinard Art Institute, earning a BFA degree in 1967.  He began his career as a painter but soon switched to a method he found more challenging, which was utilizing books, text and photographs of which, for each, he collected thousands of items---mostly about popular American culture.

As both a collector and artist, he created an elaborate web-based project called The New Five Foot Shelf, which is the contents of a book collection of nearly 800 pages of encyclopedic text written by the artist as well as photographs from his New York studio at 611 Broadway from 1986 to 2001.  Of this project, funded by the New York State Council on the Arts, it was written: "by presenting his studio, work, and traces of his sources---pictorially and literally---Ruppersberg invites us to stand in his shoes, or at least sit at his desk.  For an artist whose practice is centered around reading, to make available these texts is metaphorically equivalent to handing viewers the painter's brush and palette and letting them loose in his studio." (Tucker)
