This biography from the Archives of AskART:
Barry John Raybould (1956)

He grew up in the countryside of England which instilled in him a love of the landscape that he never lost. "I've painted as long as I can remember and my earliest influences were painters such as John Constable who showed me the beauty of the fields, trees and skies of the English countryside."

Other early influences include JMW Turner whose dramatic landscapes had an abstract quality that could still be considered contemporary today, Corot, and Monet. In 1991 he was drawn to the light of California where he became influenced by the work of the California Impressionists, and in 1999 he was accepted as a member of the prestigious Carmel Art Association.

"I feel fortunate to belong to the historic Carmel Art Association whose earlier members William Ritschel and S.C. Yuan, as well as Edgar Payne of the Laguna Beach Art Association, are artists I particularly admire for their subtle use of grays and loose brushwork. Also I love the color in some of the work of Franz Bischoff. His beautiful color harmonies I rarely see in contemporary work except for master colorists such as Ovanes Berberian, an artist from whom I have learned much."

Although many of these influences are fairly representational, he is also interested in those artists who have created more abstract representations of the landscape yet still capture its essence, in particular Oakland's Society of Six and the landscape work of the Canadian artists known as the Group of Seven.

His work doesn't really fall into any one category such as impressionist, expressionist, abstract, realist, or tonalist. He doesn't strive to create or re-create any particular style, but rather has naturally evolved his own style in the process of trying to capture some feeling about the landscape, whether it is the powerful energy of the surf on the Pacific Shore, or the tranquil mood of a flat ocean shrouded in fog. His art is all about communicating a feeling.

In his work he is trying to capture four key elements. The first and most important is the feel, mood or atmosphere of a specific place or time. He feels his paintings only succeed if they communicate to the viewer what he was feeling at the time he was painting it. That is one reason why he finds it so hard to paint in the studio - the emotion has passed.

The second is to translate that feeling into an abstract design of shapes and colors on the canvas that is aesthetically pleasing, independent of subject matter.

The third element, related to the previous one, is to leave evidence of the process of creation in the finished work. He often uses fairly loose brushwork and impasto passages of paint, not to mention the occasional grain of sand or blade of grass! This makes the painting more interesting because it lets the viewer bounce between seeing the painting as an abstraction of reality and seeing the scene it represents.

The final element is to leave some of the interpretation up to the imagination of the viewer by not rendering or describing everything. This lets the viewer get involved in the painting by bringing his or her own experiences into it in a more personal way.

In setting himself this challenge, his work is constantly evolving and each painting is a frozen moment on a journey may never end. Indeed, he is constantly travelling and painting different areas of the world, including Italy, England, Egypt, and the United States.

"It is this journey that I share with those who have been collecting my work."  He also teaches a limited number of plein-air workshops.
