Biography from AskART:
| From the Bay Area of San Francisco, Brody Reiman works in collaboration with her girlfriend Charlie Castaneda to create installations that address domestic issues of comfort and security and women involved in construction activity usually associated with males.
Their sculptural works, precisely and sparsely built, utilize raw materials such as concrete, lumber and insulation to suggest fragments of living places. The structures are often exhibited with canine lawn ornaments that serve as symbols of protection and loyal friendship.
Reiman and Castaneda have been friends since they first met when they were age eighteen in a dormitory the first day of school at Carnegie Mellon in Pittsburgh. Both completed their BFA degrees in 1992. They each earned an MFA degree from the University of California at Davis in 1994. Their first collaborative work entitled "Dinosaur Drawing" was completed in 1988, and they have worked exclusively together since 1998. In addition to working and living together, they have a dog-walking business called Two Girls Walk Dogs.
In appearance and background the two women are very different. Castenada is from Bajo, California, and Reiman was raised in a Pennsylvania steel town. However, they share the birth year of 1970 and an interest in building construction as both grew up in unfinished, half constructed houses.
The collection of the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art has one of their sculptures, and a solo exhibition of their work was held at the San Francisco International Art Exposition at Fort Mason. Another completed work was Projeto to Cuspide, Sardegna, a project that involved the community of Pirri, Italy.
