Biography from AskART:
| Although an Oregon Regionalist painter, Charles E Reynolds was born in Binghamton, New York, in 1909. He began painting seriously in the late 1940s, yet was a professional consulting forester and surveyor. His painting career spanned over 50 years in Portland, Oregon, until his death in 2001 at age 91. At the time of his death, he was still painting competently.
Reynolds was essentially self-taught, yet was closely associated with the Attic Studio in Portland for many years. The Attic Studio was composed of numerous Oregon artists who painted and sketched there and learned from one another. Reynolds was greatly influenced by Cézanne, and could be called a Post-Impressionist, much of his work was plein air.
His favorite Oregon artist was Charles Heaney and Heaney's influence can be seen in Reynold's work.
Reynolds painted in oil, watercolor, and was an expert pastel artist. He loved the Oregon landscape, city scenes in Portland, and the Oregon coast. Still life and portraits also were included in his vast oeuvre.
A notable project was a book of sketches the artist published in 1980. "Oldtown & Old Timers" included 84 drawings of skid row in Portland, and its residents. The book not only displays his expert drawing capabilities, but is a historical statement. Many of the old buildings he drew have been destroyed.
The artist for many years ground his own oil colors for aesthetic as well as economic reasons, explaining his unique palette. He used a unique monogram signature, his "timber cruiser mark", used by foresters to mark their trees. It is a combination of his three initials "CER".
Reynolds was not concerned with selling his art and rarely exhibited during his life. His first one-man show was opened on his 91st birthday in July of 2000. He died less than one year later.
