Biography from Crocker Art Museum Store:
Painter. Born in Halifax, England on Aug. 31, 1865.

Ryan's first art lessons came from his father who was an artist. He was educated at the Collegiate School in Weymouth and the Royal College of Science and Art in London where he studied art and architecture. He had five years of private study with Sir Hubert von Herkomer at the Royal Academy. Ater his father's death in 1895, he took over as headmaster of the Ventnor School of Art on the Isle of Wight. He and artist Reginald Machell immigrated to San Diego, CA in 1900. He became active with the Theosophical Society on Point Loma and taught art and astronomy at the Raja Yoga Academy for many years. A prolific writer, he contributed articles to local publications before his death in Covina, CA on Dec. 24, 1949.
