| A landscape painter, commercial artist, and bookplate designer, Charles Rider had a career both on the East Coast and in California. He was born in Trenton, New Jersey and was a student of William Merritt Chase and Stanton Macdonald-Wright.
During the 1920s, he became a resident of Southern California and worked there as a commercial artist. He helped establish the Art Students League in San Pedro and lived in Newport Beach in the 1930s.
He was a member of the American Society of Bookplate Collectors and Designers.
