A resident of Los Angeles and a major figure there in the contemporary art scene since 1981, Charles Ray creates installation works that include realistic human figures or mannequins, body parts, and eerie still-life arrangements such as human feet emerging from clocks. From his art student days at the University of Iowa, he has expressed himself with sculpture and minimalist performance art that has involved the human body with a shift from abstraction to realism.
