| | Painter, engraver. Born in Watertown, NY in 1825. Rouse was educated in the public schools of New York and prepared for a theatrical career early in life. Joining the Gold Rush, he made the trip around Cape Horn in 1849 and mined for three years. He then settled in San Francisco and was associated with the theater for 15 years creating stage effects and backgrounds. He also filled in as an actor when Edwin Booth was in the state. In 1862 he was in business with Edward Jump, the caricaturist. He was active in San Francisco as a painter and engraver at 608 Market. He died there on Nov. 15, 1892.
