This biography from the Archives of AskART:
Typical of many of the early female artists, little is known of the life of the California artist Clara L. Ruth. Census records indicate she was born December 18, 1874 in Iowa. Much information about her art education and early life are currently unknown.

In 1900 she was living in Long Beach, California with her partner Mildred Dillon; they are both listed as artists. The 1910 census notes her as living in Bowen Precinct, Nebraska with her mother, step-father and step-sister. Curiously, her mother is shown as having one living child and Clara is listed as "governess."

From 1917 thru 1955 Miss Ruth is listed in the San Diego city directory as an art teacher and artist. In 1922 and 1923, she was a resident of 3560 28th Street, San Diego and is mentioned in the newspaper, "San Diego Union" 8/10/22.

She studied art in Omaha, Chicago and Kansas City.

SDAG in 1926, 1928 and 1929.

Exhibited FOA (SDFAG) Summer Exhibit, 8/1/24 to 8/31/24.Her last address, in 1955, was shown as 3650 28th Street. Her death occurred on April 22, 1962. She was buried in the Mt. Hope Cemetery in San Diego.

Submitted November 2004 by Edward L. Bentley, art collector and researcher from Lansing, Michigan. His source was Mr. John Dent, researcher of San Diego artist.
