Dan Robbins was born in Detroit on May 26, 1925, and grew up there, attending public schools. He attended Cass Tech High where he studied art, recalling Don Brackett as being very influential in his studies. After finishing high school, Robbins entered the Army where he, like many other artists of the day, was assigned to the Camouflage Division. After a stint in the Army, he returned to civilian life and went to work for General Motors in the Chart and Art Department.
