This biography from the Archives of AskART:
David F. Routon was born in 1931 in Tennessee and lived there through his teen years. Like many who end up choosing visual art as a career, his interest in visual imagery emerged early. Off and on throughout his childhood and early teens he drew.  As a young adult he briefly tested a secondary interest in prose writing by working in journalism and explored documentary filmmaking as a possible outlet for his visual interests.  But ultimately his professional focus turned to drawing and painting.

He attended various colleges, eventually to earn an undergraduate art degree, the BFA, at Mexico City College, a private English-language college in Mexico, in 1959, and a graduate art-practice degree, the MFA, at the University of Iowa in 1963.

Subsequently he earned his living primarily as a college teacher at several institutions: Michigan State University, The State University College at Plattsburgh NY, the University of Minnesota in Minneapolis, and finally, the University of Nebraska in Lincoln.  He retired from the University of Nebraska in 1997, and presently resides in Lincoln.

Some institutions that have acquired work by Routon are: St. John's University, Collegeville MN, The 3M Company, St. Paul MN, The Sheldon Gallery (the art museum of the Unviersity of Nebraska-Lincoln), The University of Nebraska-Lincoln, The Art Museum of the University of Minnesota, Minneapolis, The Sioux City IA Art Center, College of Notre Dame of Maryland, Baltimore MD, Doan College, Crete NE, The Museum of Nebraska Art, Kearney NE, and the United States National Park Service, Omaha NE.
