This biography from the Archives of AskART:
The following, submitted August 2004, is from the artist.

David Remfry was born in Sussex, England in 1942. His family moved to Hull in 1949 and between 1959-1964 he studied painting and etching at Hull Regional College of Art. He moved to London in 1964 and in 1995 to moved to New York.

Remfry had his first solo show in London in 1973 and has since had more than 50 international solo exhibitions. His first show in the United States was at the Ankrum Gallery, L.A. in 1980. He has exhibited regularly since then at galleries in New York, Los Angeles and Florida and exhibited many times at galleries in Holland and Germany.

His work is in many national and international collections. In 1984 he was commissioned to paint Sir John Gielgud by the National Portrait Gallery, who also own his portrait of Jean Muir. In 1992 Remfry had a solo show at the NPG of the study drawings for the Gielgud portrait. (Curated by Robin Gibson). He was commissioned in 1997 by H.M. Queen Elizabeth to draw Sir John again for her personal collection, on the occasion of his being awarded the Order of Merit.

In 2002, Remfry was given a solo exhibition at the world famous P.S. 1 Contemporary Art Center in New York (a Museum of Modern Art New York affiliate), which was curated by Director Alanna Heiss. Later that year, the Dancers exhibition opened at the Boca Raton Museum of Art. The exhibition will be at the Butler Institute for the Arts, Youngstown, Ohio in 2004 and the Fitzwilliam Museum, Cambridge, in 2005.

In 2005 the Ferens Art Gallery, Hull, where Remfry had a solo show in 1975, will be holding a 30 year retrospective of Remfry's work.

In the autumn of 2002, designer Stella McCartney, who had seen a 1972 drawing Remfry had been commissioned to do for the cover of an arts magazine called 'The Image', approached David Remfry. Stella invited David to collaborate on her first advertising campaign, which was based on Remfry's 1972 drawing. He was also commissioned to produce the Absolut Stella drawings. These were exhibited at the Victoria and Albert Museum in 2004. The V&A recently purchased one of these drawings for the collection. (They had already purchased a picture in 1987).

Remfry was elected a member of the Royal Watercolour Society in 1987, was made a Fellow of the Royal Society of the Arts in 1989. In 2001 he was awarded the M.B.E. for Services to British Art in America by Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II.
