Biography from Saffronart:
Please note: Artists not classified as American in our database may have limited biographical data compared to the extensive information about American artists.

"Dilip Ranade's recent works - mixed-media paintings, drawings and sculptures - explore an intriguing area of consciousness.  This is the area where our impressions of the material present, having been formed against the intimations of the psychological past, suddenly assume the strength and significance of revelations." - Ranjit Hoskote, 1999.

In this artist's work, simple and unassuming everyday objects take on a strange symbolism, standing for so much more than anyone could imagine.  A half peeled blue banana, rendered in acrylic and pastel on paper, becomes symbolic of a raw and consuming desire. Similarly the rump of a horse, another paper piece, is transformed into an icon of questionable masculinity and heroism.  Plain bathroom faucets become extensions of the human body and the series of sculptures titled '20th Century Fossil' represent the concept of 'identity' in a modern, changing society, questioning what our future will hold for us and our descendants.

Dilip G Ranade was born in Mumbai in 1950.  He received a diploma in drawing and painting from the Sir JJ School of Art, Mumbai in 1971 and has since participated in several group shows in Mumbai, New Delhi and Bangalore and has also shown his work in solo shows at the Jehangir Art Gallery in Mumbai.

Being extremely interested in Museology, Ranade wanted to further his studies in this field, and received the Indo-US subcommission grant to do this in 1984.

This artist is working with the prestigious Prince of Wales Museum in Mumbai, as curator of its collection of European paintings.   Ranade also enjoys teaching, and delivers lectures and slide shows on "Portraiture" as well as "Techniques of Diorama Making" at major Art Universities and Institutes in the country.
