This biography from the Archives of AskART:
From Prescott, Arizona, Don Rantz is a plein-air easel painter whose subjects often scenes of his native state such as panoramic Sonoran desert landscapes, the Grand Canyon or the red rocks of Sedona.  A favorite medium is pastel.  He began painting at age 28 when he took and art class at Northern Arizona State University at Flagstaff, and to that time had been interested primarily in photography and wood working.  Most of his painting was realistic and done in oil, but in the 1980s, he was exposed to pastels, and from then he was hooked on that medium, which he describes as "immediate and completely satisfying." (32)  He was reinforced by taking workshops from pastelist Bill Hosner in Sedona.

Don Rantz is also an illustrator of award-winning children's books.  Collaborating with his artist wife, Beth Neely, and author Conrad Storad, Rantz has illustrated Lizards for Lunch: A Roadrunner's Tale by Conrad Storad, and Don't Call Me A Pig: A Javalina's Story.
