This biography from the Archives of AskART:
Please note: Artists not classified as American in our database may have limited biographical data compared to the extensive information about American artists.

Francisco Rodón spent his early childhood in San Sebastián, Puerto Rico. In 1952 he made his first trip abroad to Costa Rica and later to Mexico, where he became acquainted with the muralist movement and received his first commissions.

Continuing his travels, Rodón went to Europe, first to Paris and then to Madrid, where he enrolled at the Academia de San Fernando to take classes at the Museo de Prado. A year later he returned to Puerto Rico where he received a scholarship from the government to study in Mexico. During his short tenure in Mexico Rodón became close friends with María Izquierdo and the actress Carmen Montejo.

Shortly afterwards, the artist’s mother passed away, and he returned to Puerto Rico. Since then, Rodón has worked and exhibited most prominently in Puerto Rico. He has received numerous awards and honors and is considered one of the leading Puerto Rican contemporary artists of today.
