| | Born in Pennsylvania on Sept. 1, 1871. “Jean” Rittenhouse studied in New York with portrait painter Wayman Adams. She moved to San Diego about the time of the Panama-California Expo in 1915. Settling in Ocean Beach, she appears to have been as interested in real estate as she was in art. For awhile she had a studio in the Spanish Village in Balboa Park. Her dead body was found in San Diego on Aug. 30, 1953. Primarily a portrait painter, she also painted landscapes of San Diego's back country.
