| | Born in Maryland in 1814. George was the half-brother of artist Cadwalader Ringgold. After graduating from the U.S. Military Academy at West Point in 1833, he settled in San Francisco in 1855 and worked as a paymaster for the U.S. Army. A lieutenant-colonel, he died there on April 5, 1864. | Source:
