Please note: Artists not classified as American in our database may have limited biographical data
compared to the extensive information about American artists.
Hyacinthe Rigaud was born on July 18, 1659 at Perpignan, France in the Pyrenees. He studied at Montpellier under Antoine Ranc. He went to Paris in 1681 where he gained the sponsorship of Charles Le Brun. He won the Prix de Rome in 1685, but on Le Brun's advice remained in Paris to pursue the career of a portraitist. In 1700 he became a member of the Academy and won considerable favor in court circles. His work is typical of the grandiose manner of painting popular during the reigns of Louis XIV (showing 500 of 792 characters). |
