| A painter, writer, poet, actor and playwright who was active both in New York and California, Ira Remsen was born in Maryland where his father, Ira Remsen, was a prominent doctor at Johns Hopkins University.
The young Ira studied art in Paris under Benjamin Constant and Jean Paul Laurens, and until 1922, lived in New York City. He then moved to the Monterey Peninsula and set-up a studio in the Seven Arts Building in Carmel.
He was a member of the Carmel Art Association and the Bohemian Club. He did portraits, genre and traveled and painted California landscapes.
Nicknamed "Rem", he also wrote fantasy stories and was an actor and playwright. Upset over a broken marriage, he fatally shot himself in Carmel on November 28, 1928.

| Born in Maryland in 1876, Ira Remson was the son of Dr. Ira Remsen, president of Johns Hopkins University. The younger Remsen studied art in Paris under Constant and Laurens. He was a resident of NYC until 1922 when he moved to the Monterey Peninsula.
Upon establishing a studio in the Seven Arts Bldg in Carmel, he painted several portraits.
Called "Rem" by his friends, he was also a writer of fantasies, poet, playwright and actor. Due to a broken marriage and the rejection of one of his plays, he fatally shot himself in Carmel on Nov. 29, 1928.
