Jane Harrer Ritchie was born in Cortalnd, New York and raised in Brooklyn. She graduated from the University of New Hampshire.
A former resident of Dedham, Newton and Concord, Massachusetts, she did promotional work for H. A. Hills & Son in Wellesley before founding the Town Landing kindergarten in Dedham in 1966. She taught at Masconomet Regional High School in Topsfield from 1969 to 1976 before painting professionally.
