This biography from the Archives of AskART:
Pastel artist Joan Ranzini paints interiors, typically moving her French easel around her house finding inspiration in sometimes awkward locations. One of her favorite paintings of the light streaming in through a bathroom window was completed in the bathtub.

Ranzini works primarily in oil pastel though she occasionally paints in oil and watercolor. She prefers to work within set boundaries such as interiors of her house and garden as well as the boundaries of a given theme. In 2003 she had a show at the Lynchburg Fine Arts Center in Virginia titled "Chairs: On and Off the Wall" featuring her paintings of chairs alongside chairs made by artisans and furniture makers.

Ranzini graduated from the College of William and Mary with a bachelor's degree in fine arts and a master's degree in architectural history from the University of Virginia. She is an adjunct professor at the regional Governor's School for the Arts.

In 2003 Ranzini was awarded the Judge's Choice Award for the 37th annual "Art in the Park" show in Staunton, Virginia.
