John Heyl Raser was born in Mobile, Alabama, but is associated most closely with Pennsylvania. An inquisitive and intellectual student, Raser moved to Reading in 1851 where he opened two successful drug stores; painting was his avocation.
In 1871 he sold his stores to devote his time to painting. Initially he painted portraits, but he later painted marine scenes, still lifes, and landscapes, for which he is best known. In 1874 he traveled to Europe and by 1884 he (showing 500 of 2009 characters). |
