Judith Rothschild (born 1921 - )
from "Beyond the Plane : The Relief Paintings of Judith Rothschild" by Richard H.Axsom published by Hudson Hills Press.

Born : New York City September 1921

Education : Wellesley College, Art History in 1943; Graduate study at New School for Social Research with Henry Cowell in music composition and Leo Strauss in philosophy; 1937-1943 independent study with Alexander Brook, Maurice Sterne and Reginald Marsh at the Art Students League and with Zoltan Sepeshy at Cranbrook Academy of Art in Bloomfield Hills, MI; 1943-1944 with Hans Hofmann.

1945-1946 : lived and worked in studio on West 12th Street in New York; worked at Stanley William Hayter's Atelier 17.

1947-1948 : Married Anton Myer; first studio on West coast was in Carmel Highlands, then Monterey .

1949 : Summered in Provincetown, worked on Forum 49 with Weldon Kees; renewed contact with Romare Bearden, Robert Motherwell, Milton and Sally Avery.

1951-1957 : Out West in Big Sur, California.

1957-1958 : Year of work in France and Italy; solo exhibition in the Rose Fried Gallery; worked in Nicolas de Stael's studio in Cap d'Antibes.

1959-1969 : Moved into farmhouse in Saugerties, New York.

1970 : Artist-in-Residence at Syracuse University.

1971-1972 : Taught summer schools at Pratt Institute and Rhode Island School of Design.

1972-1980 : Corresponding editor for Leonardo Magazine; formed Long Point Gallery, a cooperative to show new or experimental work.

1988-1991 : Exhibition of work at the Tretyakov Gallery in Moscow, from which this catalog was derived.
