This biography from the Archives of AskART:
A specialist in graphite drawing of figures in landscape, usually female figures, Kay Ruane does drawings that according to her "describe emotional states, or states of being on this earth in this body" (49).

Ruane studied at the Art Institute of Chicago and the University of Illinois at Champaign-Urbana. She has held grants from the McKnight Foundation and the National Endowment for the Arts.

Before dedicating her creative talents to her fine-art career, Ruane was a flight attendant who, on December 3, 1990, had her spine broken in a plane accident. It took her a long time to recover, something she gradually achieved, and her artwork came to reflect her feelings of being trapped in her own body. She focuses on the relationship between one's body and the landscape. Humbled by her accident, she steps back from her work so that she does not interfere with the dialogue between her drawings and the viewers.

Ruane and her husband, who live in Cambridge, Massachusetts, travel widely, and these experiences allow her to do extensive photographing, which she uses to develop her drawings.
