A. Leslie Ross 1910-1989 - A. Leslie Ross was born in West Orange, New Jersey in 1910.  A second generation artist, his father, Arthur L. Ross, was a painter and rug designer.

A. Leslie Ross studied art at The New York School of Fine and Applied Art [ Parsons ] and Pratt Institute in N.Y.C.  His first studio was on East 63rd Street and from there he started his successful illustration career.

Serving in World War II, Ross was Art Director of the US Training Aid Division and designed the hand cut silk screen teaching aids for the US Forces. At the close of the war he returned to the Northeast, building a stone studio in Poughguag, New York.  Here he resumed his illustration work combined, in later years with university teaching at Dutchess Community College in Poughkeepsie, N.Y.

As a freelance artist he lived with his wife Pearl, [ a mosaic and ceramic artist] and their daughter Carolyn [ stage designer and painter].

Ross had spent summers, as a young man, on his Aunt's farm in Amenia N.Y. working with horses.  Here he developed his drawing ability and the knowledge of horses that was to establish his reputation, becoming best known for illustrations involving action and horse movement.  He produced over 300 Western covers in oil, gouache and acrylic between 1947-1956, working for Famous Western, Pocket Books, Popular Library, Street and Smith and Pines Publications to name a few.

He was also well known for his action sports covers for Super Sport, All Sports and Popular Sports combined with work for Boy's Life Magazine and The United States Line [ocean liner] with J. Walter Thompson Agency in NYC.

His major exhibitions were at I.B.M. and New York City Center Gallery combined with private collections

In his fine art oil and watercolor painting, as well as in his illustration, Ross will be remembered for his use of compelling composition, vivid color and understanding of movement.  In 1971 he was awarded the Two Thousand Men of Achievement honor.
