This biography from the Archives of AskART:
Born in Shasta, CA in 1860. Roethe's father came to California in 1849 with the Gold Rush and operated a drugstore in Shasta. The younger Roethe showed artistic promise at an early age and at 14 enrolled at the newly formed School of Design in San Francisco under Kunath, Williams and Yelland. The years 1880-85 were spent in Germany where he had further art study in Munich. Upon returning to San Francisco, he established a studio and became active in the local art scene. His bird's-eye view of Placerville, CA in 1888 was published by W. W. Elliott Company and is held at the Society of California Pioneers. He painted portraits, figure studies, and quaint interiors of domestic life. Roethe died in San Francisco on Sept. 4, 1928. Exh: Calif. State Fair, 1885-90; Mechanics' Inst. (SF), 1885-87; SFAA, 1886-87.
