| Born in Shasta, CA in 1860. Roethe's father came to California in 1849 with the Gold Rush and operated a drugstore in Shasta. The younger Roethe showed artistic promise at an early age and at 14 enrolled at the newly formed School of Design in San Francisco under Kunath, Williams and Yelland. The years 1880-85 were spent in Germany where he had further art study in Munich. Upon returning to San Francisco, he established a studio and became active in the local art scene.
