| | Born in San Francisco, CA on Sept. 4, 1886, the son of a French immigrants. Rey began drawing and painting as a student at Lincoln Grammar School. He studied art at the Mark Hopkins Institute and at age 14 traveled to Paris for further study at the Ecole des Beaux Arts. While there, a bad cold developed into tuberculosis and he returned to his native city in 1904.
