Please note: Artists not classified as American in our database may have limited biographical data
compared to the extensive information about American artists.
In 1885, Max Rabes traveled along the Mosel River to study the landscape. Matthias Engel of Traben-Trarbach/Mosel, Germany met him and was impressed with his talent. He invited him to his home and also seemed to have provided some financial support. As a gesture of appreciation, Max Rabes gave him a small water color that is in still in the family's possession.
Information provided by Wiltrud Juerries, the grand-daughter of Matthias Engel.
