This biography from the Archives of AskART:
Mel Rosas was born in Des Moines, Iowa in 1950.  He received his Bachelor of Fine Arts degree from Drake University in Des Moines and a Master of Fine Arts degree from Tyler School of Art, Philadelphia, PA.

Mr. Rosas taught at the University of Calgary in Alberta, Canada; and Cranbrook Academy of Art in Bloomfield Hills, MI.  He is an Associate Professor at Wayne State University in Detroit, MI, where he has taught since 1976.

Exhibitions at the Detroit Institute of Arts, Detroit, MI, Cantor/Lemberg Gallery in Birmingham, MI, Fendrick Gallery, Washington, DC, Butler Institute of Art, Youngstown, OH, and the Brooklyn Museum in Brooklyn, NY, highlight his career.

His paintings and drawings are in numerous private and corporate collections including the Chemical Bank, New York, NY, Detroit Institute of Arts, Detroit, MI, Carnegie/Mellon Institute, Pittsburgh, PA, Southeast Banking Corporation, Miami, FL, and the National Museum of American Art, Smithsonian Institute, Washington, DC. He won three Michigan Council for the Arts Creative Artists Grants and in 1986 received the Outstanding Young Men of America Award.

Mel Rosas' highly graphic, detailed paintings and drawings are both complex and simple--they weave in and out of the literal and the mysterious. The work represents his fascination with the glory and the sadness of urban environments, and society's growing ambivalence toward both.
