| Born in Bridgehampton, Long Island, he went to New York in 1811 and became a pupil of Joseph Wood. In 1826, he and Thomas Seir Cummings became one of the founders of the National Academy of Design. He achieved a reputation as an excellent painter of miniature portraits. |
