This biography from the Archives of AskART:
Nettie M. Ricker was born in 1866 in Poland Springs, Maine.  She was the daughter of Hiram Ricker, joint owner of the company that became Poland Spring bottled water.  Nettie studied at Cowles Art School in Boston, Mass. in the 1880's.  In 1895 the Poland Spring art gallery opened with Nettie Ricker, or 'Miss Nettie' as she was more commonly known, as the gallery director.

"Beginning in 1895, the Poland Spring Art Gallery housed some of the finest artists and for a mere hotel art gallery commanded a great deal of respect and was a sought after venue for many artists. Some of the artists included Walter Dean, D.D. Coombs. JAS Monks, Abbott Graves, Leon Dabo, Charles H. Woodbury and Nettie Ricker." (Poland Spring Preservation Society)

For several decades Miss Nettie ran an annual art show at the Gallery.

The Poland Spring Preservation Society reopened the gallery, now known as the Nettie Ricker Art Gallery, in 2003.
