Nettie M. Ricker was born in 1866 in Poland Springs, Maine. She was the daughter of Hiram Ricker, joint owner of the company that became Poland Spring bottled water. Nettie studied at Cowles Art School in Boston, Mass. in the 1880's. In 1895 the Poland Spring art gallery opened with Nettie Ricker, or 'Miss Nettie' as she was more commonly known, as the gallery director.
