An easel painter of wide ranging subjects including landscapes, symbolic figures, ballet and religious themes, Nicholas Roerich painted in a semi-abstract style with rich colors that belong to no particular 'school' of art except his own. Much of his work reflected his Russian heritage, his commitment to mysticism and symbolism, and his wide ranging travels from his homeland including western Europe, the United States and India where he spent the last ten years of his life.
