This biography from the Archives of AskART:
An easel painter of wide ranging subjects including landscapes, symbolic figures, ballet and religious themes, Nicholas Roerich painted in a semi-abstract style with rich colors that belong to no particular 'school' of art except his own.  Much of his work reflected his Russian heritage, his commitment to mysticism and symbolism, and his wide ranging travels from his homeland including western Europe, the United States and India where he spent the last ten years of his life.

He was born in St. Petersburg, Russia, and was a member of the aristocracy.  He studied law at the University in Petrograd and also attended the Imperial Academy of Arts where recognition for his paintings caused him to choose that career.

He came to New York City in 1920 and during that visit, traveled to the Southwest, living briefly in Santa Fe and painting a Grand Canyon landscape series in Arizona. He also lived in Maine, and then spent five years in Central Asia where he directed an agricultural expedition through China and Mongolia. He ultimately lived in India and died in Naggan.
