Biography from AskART:
| Roberta Rosenthal says that her two major influences were Pierre Redoute and Georgia O'Keefe. Early in her career she was mentored by artist and sculptor Nathaniel Kaz. Her early paintings were influenced by Piet Mondrian and Sonia Delauney.
She attended the High School of Art and Design with peer artists Terry Winters, Bob Pardo and Ruth Marten. After working as a staff artist for corporations and art studios, Rosenthal had a love of design and illustration that led her, in 1976, to open her own studio, RSR Designs in Manhattan. She translated her fine artworks into commercial art as postage stamps, for the Republics of Palau and the Marshall Islands. Her art has been published in the New York Times, United Nations Choices, Horticulture, Fine Gardening, Kitchen Gardening, National Gardening, Simon & Schuster, and Avon Books. Additional clients include Victoria's Secret, Croscill Home Fashion, Echo Design Group, Wendy Gell Jewelry, Disney, Art Kraft Strauss Sign Corporation, and Art Scroll Publishing Corporation.
It was at this time she befriended Charmion von Weigand and abstract artist Ce Roser. Ce Roser catalogued Charmion's work and created a film, "The Circle of Charmion von Weigand", a documentary memoir of the artist for WNET-TV NY Video Collection, Centre Georges Pompidou, Paris; The Director and Editor was Mark Brownstone, Roberta Rosenthal's husband.
From 1981 -1985 Rosenthal studied sumi-e painting with Koho Yamamoto and Chinese painting with master Kou Liang Jui bringing an Asian influence into her paintings and an award from the Asia Society. Simultaneously she was the executive director of the Graphic Artists Guilds job placement center. Her interest in business increased, and she studied art representation with Elaine Sorel who represented illustrator Edward Sorel. Roberta graduated from the American Women's Economic Development Corporations business program.
By the mid 1980s, her paintings developed into detailed botanical artworks. She studied botanical art at the New York Botanical Gardens with Anne Ophelia Dowden and Kevin Nicolay. In 1986 she became an instructor at the NYBG's continuing adult education department where she continues to teach botanical art. She also is an art instructor at the Institute of Ecosystem Studies in Millbrook, NY and at the Catskill Art Society in Hurleyville, NY. She has taught botanical art at the Horticultural Society of NY and at Star Gallery, Middletown, NY.
Roberta's art studio is located in Bloomingburg, New York. She continues to work in oils, gouache, watercolor and pastels focusing on flowers and landscapes.
