This biography from the Archives of AskART:
Born in Delaware County, Pennsylvania, a suburb of Philadelphia, Ruth Robertson has become a recognized artist in the Washington, DC area. Best known for her figurative mixed media images, her work has been influenced by the work of Jackson Pollock and Robert Rauschenberg. Her work frequently integrates photography and photographic images with abstract expressionist painting techniques.

She was educated by the Sisters of Notre Dame in Washington, DC, and graduated from the Academy of Notre Dame. She received a Bachelor of Fine Art Degree from Virginia Commonwealth University. There she studied with Charles Rennick, Myron Helfgott, and James Miller. While at VCU she became interested in figurative art and began experimenting with different ways to interpret the figure.

With a studio in the Washington, DC area, her mentor became M.V. Clark, who introduced her to many of Washington, DC's most prominent artists. Clark encouraged her interest in working figuratively and promoted her work in many DC venues including the Museum of Contemporary Art.

Her technique is novel. Her use of mixed media to render the figure is innovative and unique. She uses photographic images of figures as the geneses of most of her work by applying them to canvas or paper, and then painting into them. She moves the photograph into the realm of painting, sometimes even painting on the photograph itself.

She has been married to John Robertson since 1970. They have two daughters.
