The following biography is based on information provided by family members of Samuel Rothbort:
Born in 1882, in Volkavisk, Russia, Samuel Rothbort, a folk artist, became known for his work in wood, watercolor, oil and stone, inspired both by his fervent love of nature and his memories of his shtetl life. Of him it was written in a publication by Kaufman Art Gallery, "He is permeated with the spirit of those Shtels that once pulsated with a full Jewish life."
