Born in Dundee, Scotland on Aug. 19, 1887. Robertson studied art at the National Gallery in London before arriving in Los Angeles in 1924. He brought with him 500 finished canvases. At MGM he painted historical art for movie sets. Primarily a portraitist, he also painted marine scenes of the California coast from his yacht. He was a dog-show enthusiast and did many etchings, oils, and watercolors of various breeds of dogs. Robertson died in Los Angeles on Jan. 9, 1970. Exh: Painters & Sculptors of LA, 1924-57; Calif. Art Club, 1925; LA County Fair, 1928 (2nd prize); Pacific Southwest Expo (Long Beach), 1928; Bullocks (LA), 1929; Long Beach AA, 1929-38; Calif. State Fair, 1930; Santa Monica AA, 1930-34; Tuesday Afternoon Club (Glendale), 1931; Academy of Western Painters (LA), 1936-38; Woman’s Club (Hollywood), 1936; Webb Gallery (LA), 1936; LA City Hall, 1937, 1940; Santa Paula High School, 1946, 1949; Artists of the Southwest (LA), 1952-63 (awards); Greek Theater (LA), 1953, 1956, 1961 (awards); Ebell Club (LA), 1955; Glendale Library, 1963, 1972 (memorial).

Born in Dundee, Scotland, Stewart Robertson became a painter and etcher who settled in southern California. He studied in Edinburgh and Glasgow and the National Gallery in London and arrived in Los Angeles in 1924.

He was a member of the Painters and Sculptors of Los Angeles, serving as President from 1933 to 1935, and was a member of the Academy of Western Painters from 1936 to 1938.
