Biography from Smith Killian Fine Art:
Susan Romaine, who began her career in 1999, does representational works characterized by strong architectural shapes, which emerge from dense shadow or night and evoke a sense of the universal human quest for union and place in the world. The stark geometry of her compositions is subdued by an almost liquid light that seems to pour over the images she paints, inviting an exploration of the intriguing relationships between strength and sensuality and the masculine and feminine.

Her use of color and value are intended to create an energetic resonance among light and dark and cool and warm, which adds a depth to her work that entices the observer to enter her paintings and become the voyeur.

Primarily self taught, Romaine has studied with Burton Silverman of New York and Clifton Peacock of Charleston. In 2001, she was invited through a juried process to join Oil Painters of America as an associate member, and has participated in their Eastern Regional juried show.

In 2003, she was named the Gibbes Museum Artist-in-Residence for 2003-2004. Her work is in the Museum’s permanent study collection and was part of their exhibit, "Places and Spaces: Landscapes and Genre Scenes of the South".
